Over the weekend, I was training one of my VAs to take over some of my Reputation
work, and in this case we were going over Google My Business, and so I thought I would share five somewhat simple tricks to help improve the GMB listing and rankings.
These are things that are easy to do, but most businesses do not do them, or at least not all of them.
- Make sure all the info is correct. Seems simple, but you would be SHOCKED at how often I find that a suite number is wrong, or an old phone number is used. I dealt with a business recently, who's listing had an old address from 3
years ago... not even the same town
- Choose the right categories. Yeah, I said categories. Most business owners don't realize they can choose a number of categories, and this can make a big difference. We have seen businesses simply add categories, and suddenly start showing up in more map searches. The secret is to choose as many as are relevant to what you do. You will need one main category, so choose that wisely...

- Add lots of images and videos. The ability to add images and videos is there for a reason, use it! Get videos and images into all the different media categories (interior, exterior, at work, etc). And be sure to add more over time. Another good thing to do is have others upload images and videos as well.
- Use the posting tool! GMB has a Facebook wall-like feature where you can post messages, memes, offers and more. Use this as often as possible. We typically post a couple of items per day, the same as with Facebook. Some tools, like Bright Social will even auto-post for you.
- Get more citations and backlinks. A citation is any place on the web, where Google says the same name, address and phone number (NAP). Make surer that info is on your website, social media, directories (Yelp, MerchantCircle, YellowPages), videos and anywhere else. And be sure to grab the share link for the listing and post that everywhere you can as well.
These five tips only scratch the surface on Google My Business, and are only a small part of a full reputation plan, but they can go a LONG way, without a ton of time.
And remember, if you really want to be able to provide full reputation services, including getting reviews, optimizing sites, etc. We still have a special with bonuses on Local Reputor, but that ends soon!
